Holmes Vision

Ok so I may be a little late to the party on this. I just saw the new Sherlock Holmes on blue ray last night. It was such a great film.

This remake of the classic detective series was directed by Guy Ritchie. I have been a huge fan of him ever since Snatch. My favorite part of the movie were these super slow motion sequences called “Holmes Vision” where they portrayed Holmes thought process during fight scenes (check 1:09 of the trailer for a peak).

Typically movies are filmed at 24 frames per second. However, to capture “Holmes Vision” they used a super high speed camera called a phantom, and filmed at speeds of 3,000 frames per second, and slowed the footage down to get the slow motion effect. This process is called overcranking. I usually overcrank at a measly 60 fps like the footage in the beginning of  this video I shot for my friend Chris Davis.

What is some of your favorite slow motion footage?
